Red light therapy is used for several purposes today including skin issues, brain disorders, eyesight problems, muscle pains, depression, and even treating the side effects of cancer therapies [1]. Interestingly,  experiments on animals and humans are also confirming the effectiveness of “red light therapy for testosterone”. This also brings in many associated questions to our mind such as:

What Is Testosterone?

Clinical Studies About Red Light Therapy’s Effect on Testosterone 

Several studies are emphasizing the considerable impact of red light therapy on testosterone. 

There has been clear evidence where lack of interest in sex is successfully treated by exposure to bright light. In Italy, a group of scientists led by Professor Andrea Fagiolinifrom the University of Siena in Italy has tested sexual and physiological responses to bright light. 

The group figured out that if a lightbox is used regularly during the early morning, it leads to an increased level of testosterone and an enhanced level of satisfaction in terms of sex.  The sample consisted of 38 men who were being treated at the urology department of Siena University. These men were diagnosed with sexual arousal and hypoactive desire disorder. In both these cases, one can lose interest in sex. The initial examination determined the baseline of their interest and their testosterone level was measured. Then, the sample group of men was divided into two groups.  The researcher figured out that there is a significant three-fold improvement in terms of sexual satisfaction between the light therapy group over the control group and a significant increase in the level of testosterone who received light therapy [6].

Infertility in men is a common worldwide issue today and is estimated to have affected around 7.5% of males in European regions only. Couples are therefore relying on medicine to achieve pregnancy. One of the potential less risky treatments in this regard is photobiomodulation therapy or red light therapy for testosterone. This therapy bio stimulates cells and tissues in the testicles. Not only does it lead to an activation of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and sperm movement but it also proved to be particularly useful in avoiding chemical induction in the Spermatozoa culture medium [7].

Another study from the University of California in 2015 suggests that red light improves spermatozoa motility and does not induce oxidative DNA damage. There is another evidence which shows that by increasing sperm swimming speed, one can increase the swimming force and by using a  633nm red light irradiation, there was an increase in mean squared displacement in trapped sperm [8].

Due to heavy exercises and training, the testosterone level amongst the athletes may be dropped while they are planning a pregnancy.  At the recommendation of the doctor, red light therapy for testosterone was used and it worked. This correlates with the findings of a study where the researchers figured out the effects of low‐level laser light exposure on the motility of spermatozoa. Around thirty‐three semen samples were gathered for the purpose of analysis and most of them had defective sperm quality. After 30 minutes of exposure to the light therapy, the treated sample was compared with the untreated sample and a significant change with respect to the sperm motility was noted within 30 minutes [9]. This shows that the therapy is pretty much effective for the immediate results.

The human body can absorb red and near-infrared rays and resultantly boost energy production and transportation in the cells. This mechanism is alternatively known as ATP, which is Adenosine Triphosphate [10]. Human testicles are rich in these proteins which are activated as a result of Red light wavelength. Once these proteins are stimulated, the cells in the testicles start to respond and produce more testosterone .

Safety & Precaution 

There are certain doubts that red light therapy is harmful to testes as it produces heat. But this is true in scenarios where there are longer wavelengths and more absorption of water.  RLT produces little amount of heat, only suitable enough to boost the testosterone level without any harm to the testicles.

From the finding of numerous studies, it is evident that red light is safer than intaking oral or injectable harmful chemicals and stimulants.  Although you do not need a medical prescription to go for an RLT device but depending on your physical condition and particular circumstances, your doctor should be able to evaluate what is the best red light device for testosterone.
